The possibility of correcting open occlusal relationships increases when the use of temporary anchorage devices is considered for the intrusion of posterior upper or lower dental sectors. Aesthetic facial factors, appearance of the smile, and functional factors will define which maxillary should be intervened. The aim of this paper is to assess the modification of the lower facial height when microimplants are used as absolute anchorage for the intrusion of the posterior sectors for the correction of open occlusal relationships. METHODS: 12 cases were analyzed which presented anterior open bite with excessive superior and inferior posterior alveolar growth. In all cases, microimplants were placed in the interradicular space, buccal and lingual to the maxilla and the mandible. Intrusive elastic forces of 100 to 200 g were applied between the skeletal anchorage and the arch wire until closure of the bite. RESULTS: improved facial harmony was achieved. The radiographic measurement shows a decrease in lower facial height. CONCLUSIONS: the use of titanium microimplants is a simple and effective alternative for the intrusion of posterior teeth in the corrective treatment of anterior open occlusal relationships.
