Open Bite Cases Management: From Orthodontics to Surgery

  • Dr Magali Mujagic, France

The open bite malocclusion is one of the most difficult malocclusion to treat. It's complexity is linked to a combination of skeletal, dento-alveolar, functional and habit related factors. Open bite deformity may be inherited, developmental or acquired. Location may be in different areas : anterior or posterior . Accurate diagnosis is essential for proper treatment of open bite cases but prognosis is more uncertain than in any other dentofacial deformities.
Through different clinical cases, treatment planning will be detailed from dento-alveolar to skeletal deformities and from moderate cases to more severe ones.
Orthodontic treatments with or without surgery provide satisfactory outcomes in term of occlusion and aesthetics, but longterm stability remains our challenge whatever therapy is applied; informing our patients is of course essential.
