Tongue Position During Rest: A New Approach to Anterior Open Bite Treatment

  • Dr Flavia Artese, State University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Anterior open bite is probably one of the most relapsing malocclusions whether treated by any modality of treatment, orthodontically or surgically. Because tongue size and/or posture are thought to have a marked influence on the etiology of anterior open bite, they play an important role in treatment of this disorder. Tongue restraining mechanisms, such as cribs, have been widely used as treatment methods. Speech therapy is also indicated with the objective of improving muscular tonus and establishing a correct tongue position during function and rest. Tongue position during rest is herein considered as the main factor for the correction of severe open bite cases. Therefore, the purpose of this presentation is to show anterior open bite treatment methods based on the rest tongue position. Observing the shape of the anterior open bite, tongue position at rest can be inferred and will determine treatment modality, which can be the use of cribs, bite plates associated to high pull headgears (Thurow appliances), and removable lingual arches with spurs. Anterior open bite cases with different tongue positions at rest, treated using these methods and followed up for more than ten years with excellent stability will be presented.
