The Influence of Orthodontic Treatment on the Physical Appearance of Adult Patients and the Reflexion of Changes on the Mental Status
As it is well known, the aesthetic factor is one of the most important factors in orthodontic treatment evaluation.Good aesthetic appearance is as important for an orthodontist as the functional aspect. While establishing a healthy and functional occlusion,we often change the smile,we change the appearance of the lower third of the face and the rest of the face as well. The change of the appearance, especially in adult patient, influences their mental status because the aesthetic factor leads an adult patient to the orthodontic office.
Observing the psychological profile and status of adult patients before and after the therapy we noticed significant positive changes.Unsatisfied, frustrated and unhappy persons completely changed.
After a talk with a psychiatrist about the reasons for a visit to an orthodontist, the common characteristic of the observed patients is as follows:they reflect the loss of reality and disturbed relations which surround them.It is a part of mental life and it should not be pathognomonic. The disturbance affects the person`s functioning. When they look themselves into a mirror they lose integrity and a balance.Irrational and unconscious forces breakthrough (such as a delusion, insecurity, unhappiness).Appearance causes a psychotic fear and destructive forces which invalidate objective values and cause the development of some other psychopathologic phenomena.
After completing the orthodontic treatment the patients show a changed relation towards the reality. They accept themselves as precious and nice objects. The ego does not escape from the appearance any more. They like themselves. They accept themselves consciously and unconsciously, they talk and are not silent due to their defect on the teeth.
