Nonsurgical Treatment of skeletal Adult Open Bite with Temproal Mandibular Disorder Using Edgewise Appliance
This case report presents an adult skeletal Class II and open-bite malocclusion case accompanied with temporal mandibular disorder treated without surgical intervention using fixed edgewise technique, and MEAW technique and anterior box elastics. The patient was a 30-year-old Chinese female whose TMJ was painful when she bited. So that she had difficulty in chewing. She had a eight mm open bite in anterior teeth, mandibular retrognathia, and enamel hypoplasia of the mandibular anterior. In addition, the occlusal side of the patient’s first molars had been erosed because of enamel hypoplasia. We extracted the four premolars of this patient and applied a standard edgewise appliance and MEAW technique. After 24-month orthodontic treatment, the TMD symposum of this patient disappeared and open bite had been closed. She can chew normally and get an relatively esthetic dental and facial relationship. A steady occlusion after 15 months removed her appliance indicated that not all the skeletal open bite need surgery and orthodontic treatment maybe helpful to TMD remission.
