Objective: NiTi wires, despite their higher prices, are being increasingly used in different stages of orthodontic treatment. It’s because of their excellent mechanical characteristics. But their mechanical properties might be compromised in case of their improper recruitment. In this article we have reviewed contemporary NiTi wires & proposed guidelines for recruitment of any commercially available NiTi wire (based on brands & categories).
Methods: This presentation is based on a vigorous review of literature including articles from early ages of introduction of NiTi wires to recent articles plus major orthodontic text books.
Results: Excellent super-elasticity of NiTi wires has made it possible to engage rectangular wires early in the treatment (even form Alignment & Leveling stage). The super-elastic nickel-titanium wires, including the true shape memory nickel-titanium wires, show exceptional temperature sensitivity. Case sensitive wire selection based on characteristics of patient & its dentition, facilitates treatment and reduces treatment time.
Conclusion: Niti wires should be used in appropriate conditions with a wise selection between contemporary categories of commercially available wires or they will perform worse than anticipated, which is neither practically acceptable nor financially reasonable.
