Bimaxillary Distraction Osteogenesis-Clinical and Model Observation
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of bimaxillary distraction on the periodontal and dental structures in cases with severe crowding treated without extractios through this surgical procedure.
Material and Method: Eighty patients who underwent the procedure had their six anterior teeth assesed for mobility, sensitivity and pocket depth. The recordings have been made pre- and post-distraction, post-consolidation and at 1 year foolow-up.Pockets depths around the incisor teeth increased during the consolidation period, but returned to normal by the 1 year consultation.Tooth mobility increased temporarily in the active distraction phase and in the consolidation phase.Sensitivity was temporarily lost in 4 incisor teeth due to the apical contusion
Conclusions: Periodontal and dental morbidity is transient and limited to the previous distraction and consolidation period and favourable for the orthodontic treatment.
