Causal Relationship of Crowding in Dental Arches and Periodontal Problems in an Adult Subject
Objective: Having in mind that the optimal relationship of dental arches reduces the risk of periodontal diseases owing to facilitated cleaning and auto cleaning, the objective of this work was to apply an orthodontic treatment technique to solve the periodontal problems of the patient and preserve the supportive teeth tissue.
Subject and Method: The first step in the treatment of a 32-year old patient with crowding in dental arches (rotations, inclinations, disturbed interproximal teeth contacts), inflammation, and inadequate gingival juncture and enlarged papillae was periodontal sanation and radiographic teeth checks before and after the sanation procedure.
The second step of the treatment was the orthodontic therapy of crowding in dental arches using a fixed orthodontic technique followed by continual periodontal checks.
Results: The periodontal problems were solved and the appearance of the female patient was significantly improved by aligning the teeth arches, thus achieving optimal occlusal relationship.
Conclusion: The occurrence of periodontal problems increases with age; therefore, the role of the orthodontist, as a member of a multidisciplinary team, in the prevention of anomalies is very important.
