Distraction Osteogenesis: Use in Hemifacial Microsomia

Hemifacial Microsomia is a craniofacial malformation causing a variable degree of hypoplasia of the craniofacial structures within the first and second branchial arches. The multidisciplinary tratment not only involves the correction of associated deformity of the dentofacial structures but also involves the correction of dental relationship,the altered arch form as well as individual tooth position with the contemprory orthodontic mechanics and appliances. This paper highlights a case of unilateral Hemifacial microsomia of left side of the mandible which was treated using conjuction of orthodontics and distraction osteogenesis.The paper also brings to importance of orthodontic intervention during all phases of distraction osteogenesis.
