Correction of Dental Rotations and Crowding in Lingual Orthodontics

  • Dr Panagiotis Kanarelis, Greece
  • Dr Alexandros Kokkas, Greece

Objective: To show clinical cases of tooth rotations and crowding corrections treated with the lingual technique.
Methods: Photos of different adult patients’ cases with rotated teeth and dental crowding treated only with various lingual brackets. The corrections are demonstrated through before and after photos.
Results: The correction of tooth rotations in lingual orthodontics can be a very challenging task comparing with the labial technique. The main reason is the small interbracket distance. Especially in the anterior region, correcting rotations and crowding can be a very difficult issue. However, there are different ways to successfully do this. If there is no space this is gained with open coil springs, expansion of the dental arch, use of larger size archwires, extractions and stripping. Teeth are derotated with the use of wire bends, additional buttons and elastic chains.
Conclusion: Despite the difficulties in correcting cases of rotated teeth and crowding with lingual orthodontics, these problems can successfully be treated.
